Article 28: We have the right to a good quality education.

Prime Area of Learning: Physical Development

This week the Nursery children have all had the opportunity to explore the vast outdoor area in the Early Years. Gross motor skills development and core physical development skills has been a major focus for all pupils this week. Following Mental Health Week and also our Jigsaw Personal development curriculum the Nursery children are all beginning to understand the importance of outdoor play and physical movement play for their bodies and emotional well being. Physical development is the growth and development of both the brain and body in infancy and early childhood. It involves the development of core muscles and physical coordination. This control is used in a whole range of skills; daily functioning and encompasses the children’s ability to do a range of different tasks, such as speaking, making friends and understanding the world around them. Young children need to be given regular, daily opportunities and encouragement to practice and refine their physical skills through being active. The development of the seven sensory systems is necessary for children to effectively develop both gross and fine motor skills. This week the children have focussed on navigating a range of spaces and positions. Core body spinal strength and stability has been a focus throughout the week. The children have enjoyed moving in a range of ways outdoors. From standing, running, squatting, jumping and marching.
Outdoor provision has been carefully enhanced to develop these key physical skills which are essential for a health lifestyle. Gross and fine motor control must develop together in an integrated way, so that the child can achieve what they set out to do.
From pedalling to balancing, hopping to scooting… the children have all had a wonderful time learning outdoors!
