Art

Article 13 You have the right to find out things and say what you think, through making art, speaking and writing, unless it breaks the rights of others.

Article 28 You have the right to education.

Article 29 You have the right to education which tries to develop your personality and abilities as much as possible and encourages you to respect other people’s rights and values and to respect the environment

At Birtley East Primary School, we believe that every child should learn about art in a way that is engaging, educational and relevant throughout their school years.

Art holds a very important place within the primary curriculum; it helps to balance the weight of academic versus creative subjects, and supports the development of the whole child. By the time they leave primary school, children need the right skills and knowledge for their secondary education. It is important that they are able to see the relevance of art in their own lives.

Furthermore, art develops transferable and high value skills for the world of work, like creativity and innovation. According to tate.org.uk, ‘Schools that integrate arts into their curriculum show improved student performance in maths, English, critical thinking and verbal skills’. At Birtley East, this starts in the early years and continues to broaden and deepen as the children make their way through our school.
