Characteristics of Effective Learning in the Early Years Mar 5, 2024

Article 28: You have the right to a Good Quality Education.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning are a vital part of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. As a Nursery team we reflect on the different ways that unique children may learn. A child’s individual learning characteristic will determine the way they respond to both teaching and learning taking place in the environment. The three characteristics of effective teaching and learning identified by the EYFS are:

  • Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go,’
  • Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties,
  • Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
This Spring term the Nursery class have displayed a wide variety of these characteristics in their own play – displaying resilience and problem solving skills with new tasks! Their self led play and exploratory skills have been wonderful to observe by the Nursery team.
  • Playing and exploring – age 3 and 4 – Nursery class experiences.
